Common Issues for Women
In today's society, men and women experience many things differently. Divorce is no exception to this. The following observations are based on my own experiences working through the divorce process, and may help you understand the thoughts, needs, and behaviors that frequently occur for women. This understanding can help you create a stronger line of communication, which will in turn reduce the amount of misunderstanding and help to more effectively create you dissolution.
Remember, that truth and beauty are both in the eye of the beholder. Each person will want some things, and each person will not want to give up certain things. There is no right or wrong; there is only what works best for both parties.
For women, support and security tend to be the common goal in divorce. They look at divorce as a necessary solution to a problem and seek to protect themselves from losing things. Divorce can mean an empty feeling where a woman feels the loss of a spouse. The process is not a win or lose situation for women; instead, women tend to see it as a pathway to the future. Custody and family support issues need to be treated with care, understanding, and thoughtfulness.
When the actual issues are being dealt with, women tend to focus on family and security issues more than the financial side of things. Women also tend to feel a greater responsibility for their children. For example, men sometimes believe that remembering birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions is an adequate amount of parenting whereas women realize that parenting is a full-time job. They relish in the events of their children's lives, and understand that the day-to-day problems of raising children are a necessity, no matter how difficult it can be.
There are male attorneys who cannot grasp these differences. They may find women confusing and difficult to understand. Those attorneys cannot properly represent female clients; only through honesty and understanding can a woman have an effective legal relationship with her attorney.
